In 1991 the Indian anthropologist Madhumala Chattopadhyay achieved what no one had done before by establishing peaceful contact with the isolated Sentinelese on North Sentinel Island. As part of a 13-member team from the Anthropological Survey of India, she remained on the boat and floated coconuts toward the shore.
